This incident prompted<br \/>\nthe USGS to conduct soil gas surveys in Buena Vista Valley to test<br \/>\nthe possibility that hydrocarbon gases, measured at the surface,<br \/>\nmight reveal areas of underlying petroleum accumulation. Gases<br \/>\nwere measured in the field using a truck-mounted mass spectrometer,<br \/>\nand C1-C5 hydrocarbon gas anomalies were found in an area<br \/>\nthat may reflect an undiscovered oil deposit.
